The shift in directions came when I heard Martin Sheen's speech last week as he received an achievement award for his life's work of standing for Justice at the NADCP Justice For Vets Annual event in Anaheim, CA. It was awarded him by his dear friends and cast mates from The West Wing, each of whose thanks stirred the soul and ignited the heart of the warriors for justice each of them represents.
"Whether we acknowledge it or not, we are all responsible
for each other and the world, which is exactly the way it is, because
consciously or unconsciously, we have made it so. And while none of us made any
of the rules that govern the universe or the human heart, we are all
beneficiaries of a divine promise, that the world is still a safe place despite
our fears and we in it, are not asked to do great things; we are asked to do
all things with great love. that non-violence is the only weapon to use to
fight with. ‘Each time someone stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve a lot
of others, or strikes out against injustice, they stand for a tiny ripple of
hope and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy
endearing, those ripples build the current which can sweep down the mightiest
walls of oppression and injustice’ those words were spoken at Cape town South
Africa at the university there in 1966 by Robert Francis Kennedy. They are
enshrined on his memorial at Arlington National Cemetery as well and they have
been a powerful source of inspiration ever since."
Mr. Sheen went on to urge and ignite the action of the heart... "The Irish tell the story of a man who arrives at
the gates of heaven and he asks to be let in and St. Peter says, “Of course.
Show us your scars.” The man said, “I have no scars.” St. Peter says, “What a
pity. Was there nothing worth fighting for?”
These words struck me, and challenged me, and sent me on a renewed course. My scars are visible, my heart aches as it grows and expands in its loving movement. I know what is worth fighting for... Humanity. Peace. Joy. Love. Understanding. Justice. Healing. All of it is precious and important and complete and healed and whole. All of it is fueled by passion.
In the days ahead, I will continue to post from the loving pages of MELSLOVELAND #MINIMAG ISSUE 7 | PASSION. I hope it inspires you to act with love, to experience the joy of peace in your heart as you follow the passion of your purpose. Download the pdf here and honor yourself by stepping into a new day where kindness rules, where love is a verb and where each of us is a blessing to ourselves, our families our communities and the new world we are building together.
